Our Illegal Deck Turned Patio

The home we purchased this year has 2 existing violations. One was for an existing wood deck that was erected 40 years ago without a permit and the second was for an oversized green house that violates the town’s code concerning setback requirements. In order to legalize the deck, we would have to rebuild it from the ground up because it was not built on adequate footings. Wanting a more maintenance free option, we priced out the cost of rebuilding the deck with Trex decking and railings. The cost for an 18 foot by 49 foot deck was a staggering 45K. Our immediate reaction…yeah NO!

Since the space is almost 1,000 sq ft, we decided that a stone patio would be a better, maintenance free and affordable option. We were right!!! For less than half the price of a Trex Deck, we hired a local contractor to build a stone patio with platform steps to our French doors. Wilson from JV Masonry did an incredible job. I am in love with our new patio! My only regret is that since it’s almost December, we won’t get to fully enjoy it till the weather warms up.
